Digital literacy in teaching, learning and the administration of the Erasmus+ Programme

From May 12-13, 2022, this online conference was hosted by the German Erasmus+ National Agency of Higher Education (NA DAAD) from the DAAD headquarters in Bonn, Germany. In this two-day-conference 113 participants from all over Europe gained interesting insights and stimulating ideas on recent developments and challenges in digitalising the administration and implementation of the Erasmus+ programme.  
Through discussions, workshops, networking, and matchmaking the event aimed at defining and developing approaches and strategies for digital literacy and digital skills. It presented innovative approaches and strategies in learning and teaching in the higher education sector, many of which developed as a reaction to the challenging demands caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The event gave an up-to-date insight into the "new normal" and encouraged participants to consider the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ programme on the topic of digitalization.

Giving Erasmus+ a boost through digitalization
Dr. Stephan Geifes, Director of the NA DAAD, opened the conference by stressing that there will be plenty opportunities for participants in the next two days to exchange ideas, network with other each other and to get more inspiration on how you to use digital literacy in the Erasmus+ programme as a tool making digitalisation a success.

As mentioned above, this TCA was split in two days: On day one, light was shed upon digital literacy in higher education administration focusing on the following target groups in Key Action 1: Mobility of individuals and targeting university and departmental coordinators, International Office staff, Erasmus coordinators and administrative staff. Day two addressed digital literacy in learning and teaching focusing on all funding lines in Key Action 2: Cooperation among organisations and institutions and Key Action 3: Support to policy development and cooperation and targeting project coordinators, newcomers and other interested stakeholder.

Throughout the conference icebreaking and matchmaking activities via the DAAD Events App and Slido contributed to the interactive engagement of the audience. For example, participants shared which country’s they were representing or when was the last time they used a phone booth.

Thinking about the bigger picture
On day one, which was dedicated to Key Action 1, Nadia Manzoni and Alexandra Licht, Directorate Generals for Education, Youth, Culture and Sport at the European Commission introduced the audience to the topic with their keynote speech “European Student Card Initiative: Simplifying, facilitating, connecting”. They gave an interesting overview over recent developments regarding the policy goals in the field of digitalization, and into the digitalization the European Student Card, Erasmus without Paper and the Erasmus+ App.
In her keynote speech right before the panel discussion on day two, Dr. Ellen Fetzer bigger picture by emphasizing the role of digitalisation as an instrument for achieving overarching European goals and the priorities in the Erasmus+ programme. Concretely, she stressed the importance of embedding digital efforts into overall European policy strategies such as the New Green Deal or the Climate Action Plan. In so doing, she addressed the need of finding ways in thinking the priorities digitalization and sustainability together.
